About

Italian photographer currently based between Milano and Edinburgh and interested in portraiture, fashion, and ballet photography. Much of her work reflects a connection with dance. This is obviously present in her stage’s shoots, but also in Irina’s personal artwork and fashion photography, as she has studied ballet from the age of 7 and has continued to do so throughout her entire life.

« Medievalist, former dancer and free-lance photographer. This is how Irina Mattioli describes herself, and in doing so she highlights the main components of her photographic approach: a timeless and iconic aesthetic, the world of ballet and, above all, an utter freedom of expression. With such an eclectic background, the works of the young artist shows a tumultuous variety of inputs and interests.
In her work, the resulting pictures are the end of a process where senses and chaotic suggestions get ‘purified’ and become something neater and more essential. Bodies, limbs, faces are tangled in elegant movements, somehow ‘suspended’ in a time-less and space-less atmosphere.
Chaos and restlessness become order and peace.
Lights and shadows never ‘hurt’ the subjects with violence: they rather carve bodies out of nowhere, softly yet in a firm way. When present, the color is never random, but a calculated, vivid note on a soft-toned base.
In her creative process, the Irina Mattioli never sets for mere technical perfection, and never ceases to seek that vibrant tension that distinguishes her photography; the inevitable, dynamic consequence of being a multitude of things: historian, archaeologist, dancer and just in the end, photographer ».

Donatella Scortecci – Università degli Studi di Perugia

“My body is co-extensive with the world, spread across all things,
and at the same time it is condensed into this single point which
all things indicate and which I am, without being able to know it”.
J.P. Sartre, Being and Nothingness, 1943.

« In the work of Irina Mattioli, there is a dramatic (and exquisite) relationship between the body and its veil. There is a tension of desire and loathing, of light and darkness in the search for the truth – a truth that remains somehow hidden – that is chased through shapes, shades, flesh, and life ».
